Yes, dentists are trained and qualified to diagnose and even treat (at least at the cancer hospital I work at) oral cancer. Cancers of the tongue however can look very different and so you should own it checked out if you are concerned. You may have a red or white spot, or you may experience bleeding. The most adjectives type is squamous cell carcinoma, but there are others too. Good luck.
Look for a white or black spot that won't move about away. Dentists are trained to know what cancer looks like, and do rash treatment, but you should ask them to check it out if you are concerned.
Oral cancer usual starts as a white plaque (leukoplakia) a pre-malignant condition. Cancer itself generally be a nodular or ulcerated nouns.
Dentists are definitely trained to detect oral cancer. If you are concerned have you dentist or you regular doctor check it out.
BTW nearly adjectives oral cancers are associated near tobacco use.
